Feature Story - A Special message from Dr. Jane

We’re coming up on the holiday season, a time of year in which many of us abandon our better dietary judgments and eat pretty much whatever we want. Unfortunately, some pet parents believe that this “free pass” on nutrition and overeating extends to their companion animals, too! I’d like to caution you against sharing any high-calorie or fatty foods with your lovable pets.

During this time of year, our companion animals generally spend more mealtimes with friends and family. You should make a special effort to alert guests at holiday meals that they should not share their food with your companion animal. Even though they may believe they are giving them a special reward, they could be putting your pet in danger with foods that we eat every day. For instance, dogs and cats should never eat garlic, onions, avocado, macadamia nuts, caffeine or chocolate (you probably already knew that last one).
I can tell you, unequivocally, the very best way to reward your sweet companions is to feed them a treat specially formulated to not only please them, but also to help improve their health as well. Over my years working as a product formulator for HealthyPetNet, I’ve overseen the creation of a wide variety of nutritional, holistic treats. I’ve yet to meet a dog or a cat who doesn’t enjoy at least one of our nourishing and tasty snacks. I firmly believe that, as an important part of your pet’s diet, treats should add the healthy components that we know will help to support bodily functions. These nutrients can be found in many whole foods, including cranberries, apples, squash, zucchini, rice bran, whole grains and many others.
As a veterinarian, I ask that you feed your companion animals foods and treats that will help to improve their physical condition, because you and your companion will be happier in the long run.
Here’s hoping that you enjoy many more happy holiday seasons together with your companion animals.
Very best wishes for a wonderful holiday season,
Dr. Jane Bicks, D.V.M.
