Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs was voluntarily recalling one specific lot because of concerns that one or more bags could be potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Fido's food may be making kids sick, a government report warns, detailing the first known salmonella outbreak in humans, mostly young children, linked to pet food.
The outbreak sickened 79 people in 21 mostly eastern states, between 2006 and 2008. Almost half of the victims were children aged 2 and younger.
Dry pet foods are an under-recognized source of salmonella infections in humans, and it's likely other illnesses since then were unknowingly caused by tainted pet food, said Casey Barton Behravesh, the report's lead author and a researcher at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Possible Salmonella Contamination Sparks Recall of Tablet and Powder Supplements
United Pet Group has voluntarily recalled a laundry list of nutritional supplements for dogs and cats due to possible salmonella contamination. The action expands its recent recall of the Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for dogs.

Pet food labels contain a lot of information, if you know how to read them.
The Association of American Feed Control Officers (AAFCO) has its own set of regulations regarding pet food labels, which many states use. AAFCO labeling guidelines cover aspects such as product naming standards, guaranteed analysis (minimum percentages of protein and fat, and maximum percentages of fiber and moisture), and nutritional adequacy.
Always look for an AAFCO statement on your pet food that says either: “ABC Dog/Cat Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog/Cat Food Nutrient Profiles."

As you’ve probably noted, the vast majority of the animal rescue groups selected for our grants are small non-profits who typically operate on shoestring budgets. In many cases, the only assets these heart-full groups have are the people dedicated to aiding homeless and abused companion animals. Frequently located in small communities, these affiliations fulfill a vital need in under-served areas of the U.S. Not only do they accomplish so much with so few resources, they work every day to relieve suffering and enrich their communities.
In recent months, we have explored gifts made to Golden Rescue South Florida, Palmetto Animal League of South Carolina and Dachshund Rescue South Florida. In what follows, we provide a brief summary of the other eight rescue groups who have received grants so far this year.
